Upwards and Onwards..

Upwards and Onwards..

Victoria Falls was a diverse and exhilarating brief stop!  What with helicopter flights, Gorge Swings and rafting highs there was scarcely enough time to enjoy a decent meal together. Warthogs on the lawn were an arresting diversion at lunchtime! The orphanage visit was rewarding, as was Mpisi’s village and then it was time to see the Falls themselves, and the rainbows that day were splendid!

Little Vumbura, a great Classic camp

Little Vumbura, a great Classic camp

Botswana was next and we flew low over vast areas patterned in swirls of browns and sage beige which marked ancient water levels from a 100 years ago. At last Vumbura’s sandy airstrip appeared and we landed in a rush of wind and dust. The guides were there to meet us and we loaded up the trusty vehicles and headed for the jetty, a 40 minute drive away. A contrast to drive through water-logged areas speckled with egrets and jacanas fishing and foraging in the shallow waters, to the dry parched sand-lands of Hwange. A lone bull elephant reached high with his nose to grasp some green leaves from a jackal berry tree, a pride of lions slumbered next to the track, an adult and a yearling cub wrestled affectionately with each other , baboons groomed each other in human-like poses and we bumped and splashed on to the jetty. A short boat ride past white backed ducks bobbing in our wake brought us to the camp.

Little Vumbura is a sister camp to the larger Vumbura Plains, and as a tented camp on a small island enjoys a Classic status. What a lovely spot to be, and all the more pleasant for its simple luxury beneath spacious canvas rooms and outstanding cuisine.

Tea time was always welcome

Tea time was always welcome

Every day here was a great adventure. Drives across the bush brought us all different sights and sounds. The only time we combined was for that worthy institution…”Elevenses…Tea time”. We would gather somewhere suitable and the guides would set up the folding tables (part of the vehicles) and lay out the flasks and mugs.
